Sydney brought three outfits for the photo session.

Before the shoot Libby's biggest fear was that she would have a hard time connecting with the camera getting "the look" she wanted.

"My experience was great I felt so relaxed everything felt like it came naturally. Susie really set the mood and helped me feel comfortable connecting with the camera.

I love photographing senior students bringing out their personalities and passions.

It makes a tremendous difference when the "seniors" pic the location, it's nearly always somewhere where they feel comfortable and connection to.

"Talk about what you'd like to wear, what your passion is how you could incorporate that passion into your shoot.

I would say if you're anxious or nervous about how the pictures will turnout just listen to Susie's advice because it really helps.

Newmarket Farm Senior Sessions Rancho Santa Fe, California - Libby

I feel like I haven’t blogged a senior session in AGES!!! Because I haven’t…that what happens when you have been off work getting shoulder surgery!!

enough of that and on to this....

Meet Libby, she's absolutely fabulous, full of life and super impressive all around. I met Libby at the pre photo session meeting over a cup of coffee. Libby told me afterwards that she loved our pre photo session meeting because we got to plan out everything and discuss location, lighting, time, clothing, hair and makeup. I I asked Libby to send me some inspiration images from Instagram to really get an idea of her style and her expectations. I was super excited when she sent me "editorial style" images!

Libby brought three outfits for the photo session. Her cable sweaters and jeans worked beautifully, with "boho chic" accessories.

Good Luck Canada Men's Rugby XV on the upcoming Word Cup Qualifier against Uruguay

The Canadian Men's XV are no doubt putting in some serious heart and soul as they prepare for the rugby World Cup qualifying against Uruguay this weekend January 27, 2018....it reminds me of the heart and soul I put into creating a university rugby club "fund raising calendar".

One of the very same university boys will be representing Canada this weekend so it seems fitting for me to take a trip down memory lane and share some of my experience and photographs from the shoot in 2015.

The young squad off 15 guys were excited to meet at the field as we were about to start work on their "Rugby Calendar" shoot. I was asked to photograph the calendar as my son at a time was a member of the rugby squad (as you can imagine he wanted no part of this- and who can blame him).

The day started out quite slowly with the boys running around the field to get warmed up and doing an abundance of push-ups- at first I didn't understand what it was all about until I was told later that they were "pumping-up" to make themselves as "buff" as possible.

I didn't make too much of it as I have three sons that were constantly talking about warming up, pumping up, while getting ready for their various sports while at the same time looking in the mirror-

In the thick of the shoot I found myself being focused on only capturing what I thought would be fantastic images ........ and they are fantastic!

It was quite a frenzy to try and shoot 15 young men for an 18 month calendar in only three hours, working alone- and "boy" did I have to work hard behind the lens and at the same time use every motherly skill I had to keep them all in line and organized.

Scouting for location - Where oh where shall we go?

Once given the brief for an editorial shoot my next job is to scout for locations, its the same if I'm photographing for a magazine or a family shoot for holiday cards. Preparation is "key" to producing beautiful images.

When I look at potential locations for my photo shoots, I always try and visit the place at multiple times during the day. This gives me an idea of the lighting at different times. Not all light is created equally, early morning light is generally soft and subtle. The light at mid day can be harsh, especially if there is no shade to work in. Evening light tends to be more warm and golden hue hence the term "golden hour" an hour before sundown. Post-sunset light is blue.

Little details are really important for me to be able to plan my day and photo shoot, yes no one wants the "perfect" image ruined with unexpected "photo bombs", so time of day is also important.

High School Senior Portraits - Solana Beach, California - Marni

Marni is a vibrant young woman, who loves yearbook, volunteering and animals! After her high school graduation she plans on getting her

degree in Public Relations so she can become a manager in the entertainment industry.

Here are some of the questions I asked her after the time we spent on her senior photoshoot.

What did you like about our Pre-Photo Session meeting?

I liked that I got to have my shoot personalized to me, and that we got to choose where we were going to shoot.

What kind of look were you going for in the shoot?

I was going for a casual/edgy look

How many outfits did you bring and was it enough? Was it too much? Anything you'd change?

I brought 6 outfits, I think it was a good amount because there was a lot of variety

Did you bring any props? If so, what were they and why did you decide to bring it?

I had a camera prop because I love photography and I am editor in chief of the Yearbook

What was your biggest fear or worry about the photo shoot? What was the outcome?

I didn’t have any fears! My only issue now is that I have too many amazing photos!

(about now I'm blushing!)

Did you like the location we used?

I loved it.

How was your overall senior photo session experience?

Amazing!

Be prepared for a fun afternoon, and get your make up done professionally.

Dame Zandra Rhodes at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar CA -| Go Red

Women from all over the county attended the 2016 San Diego Go Red For Women Luncheon on Friday, March 4th, held at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar
Most excitingly, the Go Red event featured a fashion show from none other than, Dame Zandra Rhodes! My dear friend and colleague StudioSavvy Deena Horacek-Von Yokes and her mom, Vickie Lavanty Salon, collaborated once again as a fierce mother-daughter team to create fabulous hair fashion for Zandra’s fashion show. This was an incredible opportunity to not only give back, but also to experience the extraordinary artwork of Dame Zandra Rhodes and my favorite mother-daughter hair fashion team.

Kate

Today I want you to meet Kate: she’s a determined, bubbly and positive young woman. I first met Kate as a Kindergartener so having the opportunity to take her senior photographs was a real honor!

At our pre-session meeting, Kate shared with me that she wanted a classic senior portrait look in a gorgeous natural environment. She hoped I would be able to capture something of the transition from the girl she is today to the young woman she will become.

Kate brought with her three outfits which mixed and matched so beautifully, the colors worked well. I had asked Kate to bring some hats. I persuaded her to wear a beanie with one of her outfits; that decision was a little different for her but I know she was really glad she tried it because the results are so pretty! Kate wanted to go for simplistic accessories so she only wore stud earrings and a necklace. This was completely the right choice as it reflected her style perfectly.

When Kate was asked whether she had any advice to offer others preparing for their senior pictures, this is what she had to share:

“Communicate what your vision is and what aspect of your life you want to bring out in the photos and Susie will have fantastic ideas! Choose outfits that you are comfortable and feel good in; it will give you confidence that will show in the pictures. Use Susie’s “MUAH” stylist, Dana, for your hair and makeup - she was amazing! She knew exactly what she was doing and she really listened to what I wanted. The result was gorgeous and perfect for the photos! Lastly don’t worry about posing; I was but Susie was really helpful in telling me what looks good and what I needed change to get natural results. The outcome was great!”

After high school, Kate is going to college. She’s not sure where that will be yet but I know she has some great choices already! She’s planning on studying business, so look out world, this future business woman is going to leave huge footprints!

Kate, keep being as amazing as you always have, as you step forward into the collegiate world and beyond!

High School Senior Portraits - Encinitas, California

Today I want to introduce you to Lillie: energetic and outgoing are the two words that spring to mind when I think about this young firecracker!

Lillie is a senior in High School, where she has been involved with several leadership activities, such as the Youth and Government program, and she currently holds the position of Senior Class President on the Student Council.

I first met Lillie at a local coffee shop, on a very wet California day. It was a great opportunity to ask her a few questions so that I could get to know her a little better and tailor a session that would reflect her style and bubbly personality.

The session itself included a couple of different locations and wardrobe changes, so the energy and giggles kept on coming!

I loved the outfits that Lillie brought to the shoot, especially this off-white lace dress: the contrast against the barn door is gorgeous.

I later asked Lillie whether she had any advice to offer others who were getting ready to have their senior pictures taken. This is what she had to share:

“When planning your senior shoot, do what you think is unique to you and don’t be afraid to tell Susie because, whatever your idea is, she will try to make it a reality. I was going for something that was really “me” and since I love my car and people always say how well it suits me, I thought it would be cute! Be confident and wear what you feel good in. The day of the shoot, just relax and have fun! Overall, my senior photo experience was honestly amazing! I loved shooting with Susie and felt so comfortable during the whole session.”

Following high school, Lillie is planning to go to New Zealand and then on to an out-of-state college.

Lillie, I wish you tons of happiness on your travels, which I’m sure will be awesome! I know you’ll do wonderful things at college and wish you every success.

Family Photos - I adore this family!!!

Oh how I just adore the family I'm blogging about today. I'm lucky enough to say I've been photographing Marc out on the lacrosse fields for a few years now so it was brilliant to have his whole family together to capture some ever lasting memories.

And, it goes without saying, Master Marc Lefferdink has become part of my extended family! It's hard to not become attached when week after week I get to shoot Marc's lacrosse games.

When Marc's Mom called me to take their family photos, I don't think I could schedule them fast enough. And as for the day of the shoot, we all had a lot of giggles and got thoroughly wet.

Let me stop for a second to tell you that I am seriously the luckiest photographer in the world. My clients are always so fabulous to work with. That's true of my session with Kaitlin's family, too!

I met up with them on a spectacular September evening at Cardiff State beach. There is no doubt the location was amazing but it was Kaitlin's sense of being in the "moment" with her family that made this shoot so much fun.

I have been capturing these guys on the lacrosse fields countless times over the years - I get to know them so well from 300 meters away even though I may not actually talk to them. I can anticipate their plays and attitudes all from behind my lens, so to have one on one time with them for their senior portraits was pretty awesome.

Much like capturing sports action I like to capture the "moment" when a sliver of their personality shines through and is for ever captured and recorded.

These guys did a pretty fabulous job............

TRIrock San Diego - 110 CCFA "Team Challenge" athletes raced to find a cure

is billed as the largest triathlon in San Diego. The event includes 2 different courses, the Sprint - a 500 meter swim, 11-mile bike, and a 3-mile run. The Intermediate- a 1500 meter swim, 22-mile bike and 6-mile run.

The morning of the event the nonprofit announced 110 CCFA "Team Challenge" TRIrock participants collectively raised $350,000 for Crohns and Colitis!

WAY TO GO!!!!

There are so many stories within this story as to why these everyday heroes train 6 days a week over a 4 month period to compete in a race built for champions while at the same time fund raising $1000's to help find a cure for the very "not-sexy" diseases Crohns and Colitis. Many of the CCFA team challenge members are at the mercy of these disgusting diseases yet still display tremendous courage to get up and out every day to swim, bike and run for the cause!

I'm both proud and honored to have captured these heroes out on the course this past weekend for not only are they heroes they are my team mates.

The Country Friends celebrated 61 years of philanthropy and fashion on Sept. 17 at The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe when the organization presented the annual

“Art of Fashion”

The nonprofit announced recently that it is honored to partner for the 11th straight year with South Coast Plaza, an international destination known for luxury shopping, personal service, and upscale amenities. Proceeds from the fashion show and luncheon, featuring boutique shopping and the Après Affaire wine tasting, benefit more than 30 San Diego County charities, including Angel’s Depot, Armed Services YMCA, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Burn Institute, Canine Companions, Hospice of The North Coast, Mama’s Kitchen, Pro Kids The First Tee of San Diego, Promises2Kids, Ronald McDonald House Charities, San Diego Brain Injury Foundation, and many more.

I love being able to capture this event as it has such a fun garden party atmosphere. All that attended were lucky enough to enjoy this gathering outside on the lawns at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe.
